Mention the word theft and the first thing that comes into our minds would be something along the lines of a guy in a stripy jumper stealing from your local supermarket. Theft is rarely thought of as an infringement of copyright, stealing someone’s creative work whether it is an image or marketing campaign. Theft or duplication of designers artwork can be crippling, imagine spending hours on a design concept trying a few ideas out, then finally coming up with your master piece and adding it to your online portfolio, only to find a few days later some one else has used this exact same concept (image, animation etc.) and ahs taken the credit for it. Well with a few simple steps it is easy to overcome this problem or at least protect yourself so claiming credit can be made easier.
One of the easiest art forms to protect yourself with are photographs and there are numerous ways to protect your photos. The easiest way top protect your photo is to only distribute photos at a low resolution (72dpi) this will ensure that your photograph can never be sent to print, it may appear on websites etc. but no real profit will be gained from this. Again when sending samples over to your clients always send low resolution images that will be fine for on screen viewing, so hold back your high resolution pictures until you have been paid in full.
Another way to protect your art work is by adding meta data to your photos, if you haven’t added meta data to a photo before it sounds complicated but it very simple. Meta data is embedded text information in a photograph it can contain details such as photographers name, when the photo was taken manipulated copyright information etc even your telephone number. Meta data can be added simply by using programs such as Photoshop and can be read by numerous other programs.
These are just a few simple ways to protect your work, cheap quick and easy.
