2.Decide your job

After that it’s think about what we you to achieve through the newsletter. Rather than considering this very broad question, let’s break it down into a series of smaller questions that address specific issues.

3.Target audience

Next step is to think about readership: who are we trying to target with our emails.

4.Budget

Once you have what feels like a workable set of bottom-line and means-to-an-end goals, it’s time to look at the budget that you’ll need to achieve them. As with goal-setting, this process may take some time and effort, and you may end up adjusting your bottom-line goals in order to stay within your budget.

Opt In Email Marketing

How many times have you heard that the money is in the list? I hear it on a daily basis and I have to smile every time I do because it is so true! Welcome to the direct mail of the 21st century.

So why does it work? Well mostly it works because you will be using opt in email marketing (to avoid spam accusations) which is where people request information from you and then confirm that they did request it. Anybody that requests information and then also confirms is a good prospect who wants to receive your first email!

Now you have to make sure the information that you give them in that first email is good. Try not to sell to them in that first email or you will sour the relationship, and opt in email marketing is all about building a relationship. You need to cultivate trust with that individual so that when you do recommend a product that they listen to what you have to say and are responsive to the offer.

Most of the time people complain as they don’t have a huge list of people to email to. Well first of all then build that list! Create a capture page and start promoting that page. Secondly, with just 100 good subscribers I have a good relationship with I could make some good money. It is all about quality rather than quantity, although both would be better…

So what do you promote? Well by far the easiest products to promote are those sold through Clickbank as all the payment and commissions are automated so you do not need to worry about fraud too much or not receiving your cheque. You receive up to 75% of the sale as they are digital products and you receive a cheque every two weeks, and you can promote the product with just a simple link. So you buy the product first (you can’t recommend it if you do not know what it is like) then you write a review of all the best points, put your link at the bottom and blast it out to your list and watch out for the commissions if you did everything right.

Opt in email marketing is my favourite way to earn money and certainly the best way I have found. Just make sure you do not abuse the power and start to promote inferior products or you will lose the relationship you have so carefully cultivated.

Before I even really begin this, I have to tell you that as effective as email marketing is for me, it is only as effective as my entire system is together – that is the bottom line. You have to have a system. And there are a lot of them for sale out there – and if you look at the systems – they are all really about same thing.

They are about traffic and conversions. That’s it. Traffic and conversions. Traffic is the fuel – you have to get eyes to your web pages in order to sell anything.

And conversion is where you make your money. That is where they buy from you. And that is it. Check it out – look at every system you have bought, ever, about how to make money online, and they are about traffic, conversions or both. Sure, they might call it something else – but it is all the same thing.

And all email marketing is is octane booster for your fuel. Now, you have to have a fuel to get people to your squeeze page so you can build your list. You have to have one. Why one? Because it is hard to get good at several. Trust me. I have tried it. I have gotten good at one – article marketing.

But you do not have to get good at the same one I am good at. But you have to choose one. If you have two, then you can only be half good at each one – but half good plus half good does not equal one – it is like the square root of ½ times ½. The only way you really get ahead online is by becoming an expert at something.

So you have to get good at one form of traffic.

Then you use email marketing to boost your traffic – I boost mine by about a factor of five, by getting people to opt in to my list, and then I send them to my web pages repeatedly.

A new report by the Nielsen Norman Group Report entitled “Email Newsletter Usability” has just been released. In the report, they look at the effectiveness of newsletters as a part of your email marketing strategy.

Some of the reports positive finding were:

* readers often have a highly emotional reaction to newsletters

* readers tend to forward newsletters to friends and colleagues

* newsletters create a bond between readers and your company

* newsletters are convenient – delivered to the users inbox

Some negative findings were:

* readers often felt frustrated when trying to unsubscribe

* there is little tolerance for newsletters that waste time

* readers are subscribing to fewer newsletters

* newsletters are sent too often

So there you have it, overall newsletters are welcomed by most of the readers. However, email marketers must do a better job with their newsletter marketing if they hope to retain their current readers and add new subscribers.

Your newsletter must:

* be informative and relevant to the readers’ needs

* have a predictable publishing schedule

* be brief and to the point

* have a strong subject line so that it’s opened

* be designed for users who scan rather than read
