Mac operating system ( OS X ) uses permissions, which group and user can modify or access stored files. It enables this powerful operating system to work like a multi-user operating system, for maintaining clear detachment between the files owned by various users. This detachment offers security and confidentiality. System stability and reliability is also ensured by this method, as only the administrator can delete or modify your system files. However, in some cases, the permissions get damaged and you can not access the data stored in your account. This behavior leads to critical data loss situations and requires Mac recovery to be fixed.

The hard drive permissions may become faulty from time to time. It happens usually after software installation. The file and directories, whose permissions are damaged, become inaccessible and you may lose your valuable data in such cases. Because the damaged permissions may affect the reliability and security of your system, you are recommended to repair Drive permissions after installing a new software.

The Disk Utility, an inbuilt hard drive repair and consistency checking tool of Mac OS X operating system, offers you a way of repairing the hard drive permissions. The repair process runs in background and you can perform other operations while repairing disk permissions. Repair process can also be done using command-line interface.

How to repair disk permissions?

You must have login details of administrator-level account to perform this task. Go through the underwritten steps to repair damaged permissions and perform data recovery Mac to gain access of inaccessible files/directories:

Launch/start Disk Utility application.

Select disk, which needs to repair permissions, from list of hard drives in Disk Utility.

Click to select the ‘First Aid’ tab.

Click the ‘Repair Disk Permissions’ button.

The above method works in most of the cases and helps you to perform Mac disk recovery. However, if it does not work, you need to format the hard drive and reinstall Mac OS X. It can fix all your hard drive related problems, but also removes data from the drive and cause severe data loss.

The Mac recovery software come for your help in such cases. They thoroughly scan whole hard drive and extract all lost data from it. The applications have interactive graphical user interface and offer easy recovery in all data loss scenarios.

One huge problem you may encounter is when your computer decides to fail and you didn’t have the data backed up. This means that potentially you have data loss. There are many ways that you can attempt to recover this data even without a backup.

The first issue which is fairly common is that your operating system has failed. This means that the hardware on the computer is fine but on a software level the computer is no longer working. With Windows, there is an option to repair the operating system with your system restore disks versus deleting everything on the drive. Use this and get things fixed up. If the operating system loads again correctly, you should be able to use your computer.

If this is not working or you do not have restore disks, a more advanced way of recovering data is with what is called a Linux Live CD. Download Ubuntu which is a Linux distribution and burn the 700 megabyte file to a CD as an image. This will allow you to boot from the CD. When you boot up, you will be running Ubuntu but you can use its file system to find the files on your computer and make a complete back up of your drive if need be.

If it is a hardware issue, the hard drive might still be working. You will need to connect the hard drive to another computer so that you can get to the files. There are many external enclosures for hard drives that you can buy and put your drive into to make it work like an external storage device. This way you will be able to get your data.

A final option is to send your drive off to a data recovery company. This will cost the most and take the longest time. But these services are fairly effective at getting your data back at the right price.

In the future, make sure you do frequent backups so data loss will less likely be an issue.

Some companies, even in this day and age of viruses, do not believe that backing up their systems is a vital part of their overall IT strategy. But, if your company is not backing up, then you are living on borrowed time. Eventually the odds will catch up with you and a virus will hit, someone in your company will download a rogue application and freeze up the system, or the entire server will go down for no apparent reason. It happens in all companies sooner or later, and if you choose to backup Exchange servers sooner rather than later, you will be more apt to have valid data that you can recover.

Think about how long it has taken your company to get your servers in the condition that they are in. Years and years’ worth of data entry, emails, applications, customer data, billing information, and all kinds of data that can just never be replaced is all sitting there, just waiting to be lost. If you don’t backup Exchange, and do it regularly, you risk putting your entire company out of business, not to mention losing your job.

Of course, backing up your data is just one part of the equation – the other part is restoring it. Many companies fail to pay attention to how easy it is to restore from a particular piece of software, so if you backup Exchange servers using software that is out of date, does not come with support, or no one knows how to use, then it is about as good as not having a backup at all.

Backing up your system, your data, your customer’s information, and all the work that everyone has put into it during the lifetime of your company is absolutely vital in today’s high-tech world.

A Linux based computer system becomes unbootable in case its file system gets corrupted or damaged. In most of these situations, a Linux user encounters an error message that does not allow him/her to access the data saved on the Linux hard drive. Few main causes for corruption in file system (either EXT4, EXT3, or EXT2) can be improper system shutdown, inode corruption, superblock damage, virus infection, accidental system shutdown, and operating system malfunction.

To overcome such situations, the user needs to repair the damaged file system using ‘e2fsck’ command. This command checks and repairs the corrupted files system in almost all cases. However, the command does not ensure 100% repair in all file system corruption scenarios. For cases where the above command fails, the user needs to reinstall Linux operating system and then restore data from an updated backup. But, in the absence of a valid backup, you will need to opt for a commercial Linux Recovery application.

To illustrate the above situation, consider a practical scenario where you encounter the below error message while trying to boot your Linux system:

“ext2fs partition type 0×83….. ext3-fs: journal inode is deleted….mount: error 22 mounting ext3 error 2 mounting name switchroot: mountfailed:22 umount/initrd/dev failed:2 kernal panic – not syncing.”

Once the above error message flashes on your screen, the system becomes unbootable, further resulting in inaccessibility of hard drive data.

Cause:

The above error message appears when the files gets corrupted or damaged.

Resolution:

Follow the below guidelines to resolve the above error message:

1. Run ‘e2fsck’ command to repair the corrupted file system.
2. In case, the above command fails to repair the file system, follow the below steps:

Reinstall the Linux operating system.
Restore the data from an updated backup.
For cases where there is no backup available, use a third-party Linux Data Recovery software.

A Linux Data Recovery utility is a powerful tool that is specifically designed to recover data post clean reinstall of Linux operating systems. Such tools are very easily understandable and do not require any technical knowledge.

Stellar Phoenix Linux Data Recovery is a safe, fast, and effective Linux Recovery utility that recovers data from formatted Ext4, Ext3, Ext2, FAT file system based volumes. Supported by almost all Linux distributions, the utility recovers every file and folder, irrespective of its type and size. This powerful repair tool includes functionalities like hard drive cloning, create image, and S.M.A.R.T.
