I’ve wanted to set up a library scavenger hunt for a long time, but I just haven’t seem to had the time to do it. Now that my daughter is getting a little older and can somewhat handle her own when it comes to reading, I think now would be a great time to take on this endeavor! Here’s what I’d like to do: (take notes!)

I think first I’d pick out different books in which to hide clues… you know: really odd ones like books telling you how to survive in the wilderness or how to survive if you’re dropped off in Thailand or something. Stuff that nobody you know actually reads. (That way, when you put clues to other books inside them, there’s a good chance that the book will still be in the library!)

Once I have the five or six books (or movies) picked out, it’s time to start putting clues inside them. Designate a page, such as page 50 for every book. If you want the first clue to the next book to point to a book called “The Total Moron’s Guide to Light-Speed Travel”, then maybe you’d want to draw a picture of Captain Kirk’s brain oozing out of his head while traveling really fast. If your child is TOO young, then maybe tone it down a little. But you get the idea.

In my opinion, this could be a good way for your kids to learn a little about the Dewey Decimal System and how to operate the not-so-archaic card catalog. It’ll be fun, and I’m excited to finally do it. Enjoy yourselves as you try this out as well!

As a single parent with one child, grocery shopping is really not too difficult. It gives me a chance to hang with my daughter and do some fun shopping. But what about families with three – or even SIX or more – children? Maybe not so fun for mom! I think it would be fun to make a game out of the shopping – a grocery “scavenger hunt” – complete with treasure at the end.

It may or may not work – I suppose it depends on if your kids are going to buy the whole idea. But as long as one or two of them do, there may be hope!

It’s best if you live in a safe town and you can trust that your children are going to be O.K. away from you for a bit. Obviously.

But what I’m thinking is you could give each of them a list, complete with a couple wild items that you don’t really need, but that will get them wondering. Before you hand out the lists, shuffle the different lists and pick three items at random that will be “treasure” items. If they find one of the treasure items, they get first pick of candy or sweets for the week. Likewise, whoever finishes their list first (with no errors) gets to pick something similar.

On the lists themselves, maybe throw in some adjectives. For example, instead of just writing down “spaghetti”, have it say “spaghetti without scurvy”. You know, words that a pirate would say. It doesn’t have to make much sense – and maybe it’s funnier if it doesn’t – it just needs to be an entertaining way to keep your kids occupied while doing the shopping.

Maybe next week they’ll want to help with making the list funny!

With people having to tighten their belts more and more in the present economic climate, many of us can no longer to afford to eat out in restaurants with friends, so are turning to home entertaining as a more cost effective way of socializing. Just the words ‘dinner party’ are enough to strike fear into many simple home cooks. Although you may be able to struggle along for your partner or children, as soon as you invite friends to sample your cooking you can begin to feel that your talents (or lack of them) have been laid bare.

Well, it doesn’t have to be frightening, in fact, if you remember back to your most enjoyable evenings with friends, the food actually comes pretty low on the list of reasons to remember. You are much more likely to remember the company, the atmosphere and the whole ambiance of the evening, rather than just the food.

There are certain rules which can be followed in order to make home entertaining as stress free as possible. Prepare your menu carefully, and include as much as possible which can be prepared in advance. There are some wonderful soups which can be made earlier in the day, or even weeks ahead and frozen, and can be an extremely tasty starter, especially for a winter dinner party in front of a cosy fire. Don’t serve anything which has critical timing, a simple grilled steak can be delicious if cooked just right, but end up like a bit of shoe leather if you’re busy with other things and over-cook it by just a few minutes. You want to spend as much time as possible with your guests, and not make them and you feel uncomfortable by running off every two minutes into the kitchen.

Go for the simple things in life. What could be more enjoyable than to sit with friends around a steaming bowl of pasta, a fresh green salad and wonderful crusty bread, a glass or two of cheap wine and a delicious bowl of ice-cream for desert, (home-made of course).
