Web Designing – 10 Big Mistakes

There are web designers who design websites and are more concerned about the frontage of the website. Instead of making it easier and simple for the users to use the web site they make it more complicated ignoring the usability of the website. Here are some top ten mistakes a web designer makes that they avoid.

1 – Scrolling Text Marquees and Constantly Running Animation

While you going through a website you often face difficulties like movement of texts or images. It is more like you not giving a service but providing a headache to the customer. These moving images or texts have overpowering effect on the human peripheral vision. In some cities this has been an incessant attack on the human senses. It can also have a bad effect on eyesight. The web designers should overcome this problem and give some peace to the customers.

2 – Frames

Frames make it complicated for the user to bookmark the page in use and even sometimes make it difficult for the user to return to the page. It is also problematic to make printouts and often the URLS stop working. A person who is navigating the web site can have a nosebleed if he is not technical.

3 – Bleeding Edge Technology

A bleeding edge technology is whatever goes on to be the web technology of the moment. Java and shockwave were in use this year its DHTML and XML. Whatever these names means are unimportant and only the users with bleeding edge technology can take advantage of these. The best way to know if you are not using the bleeding edge technology is to be sure that everything is working properly and good in Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer both.

The user’s have small patience if they do not understand anything on the web site then they have billion other options and they can go and serve on some other website which is much simpler and easier to use and can give the information required with better service. This can also have a bad effect of your site’s reputation and you can expect the users to flee away and not come back to you soon. It is better to make the website worth using and make the customers yours forever.

4 – Orphan Pages

An orphan page is a page without any associated pages attached to it. It can also look up to pages that do not subsist any longer. The pages used should have the link going to the homepage and should be related to the same website. I often see users can enter the website using any page than the main page. This is all because of the lack of management and poor update. The site management software makes it easy for the web designer to repair faulty links and non-existent pages.

5 – Outdated Information

When people make website, in the early days they are very excited about it and keep the website updated but later they feel its very time consuming and they don’t give much attention to it making the customers feel uncomfortable and vanish. It’s the duty of a web designer to keep the website updated and maintain the contents of the site. Maintenance is a cheap way to enhance the content of your website since many old pages keep their relevance and should be linked into the new pages.

6 – Complex URLS

A web designer should try to make the URLS easy and simple by using short names and with no special characters in it. This will help the user navigate your site easily.

7 – Long Scrolling Pages

All content option should be on the top of the screen. The user will only scroll if he sees that there is anything useful lower down the page.

8 – Lack of Navigation Support

Don’t think that the user’s knows about the website as much as you do. They have difficulty finding information. We should provide a site map since only the best navigation support will never be enough so we also need a good search feature.

9 – Non Standards Link Colors

Red and purple are used for the website that has been used and blue is used for un-open websites. Do not mess with these colors since the ability to understand what links have been followed is one of the navigational aides.

10 – Long Download Times

If downloading will take a lot of time user will lost interest in the website and will look for some other. 10 seconds is the maximum time on the web, 15 seconds are acceptable for more than one page.
